Finding optimal positions for machines, equipment, cells, or departments within a workspace constitutes a facility design problem. The challenge intensifies when dealing with unequal-area static facilities due to the NP-hard nature of the problem. This work introduces a novel approach utilizing Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to minimize total material handling costs for such facilities. The proposed PSO method is applied to literature-based problem cases, incorporating two local search methods and a department swapping technique to enhance solution quality and mitigate local optima. Comparative assessments demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm in generating favorable layouts for static facility problems.

摘要
