This paper proposes two novel modular-rotor asymmetric interior permanent magnet (AIPM) generator topologies for wind power generation by using symmetrical PM configuration and asymmetric modular-rotor iron core designs for torque density enhancement. The proposed asymmetric V-shape MAV and asymmetric spoke-type MAS machines and a conventional modular-rotor spoke-type IPM machine are designed and optimized using the same stator, rotor diameter and total PM volume and their performances are compared. The comparison of electromagnetic performance shows that both AIPM machines can achieve higher torque density due to magnetic-field-shifting effect. Besides, the V-shape MAV machine also has significant over-load capability proved by more than 5%–15% torque enhancement at high load conditions.
