Numerical Analysis of Geofoam Applications as Embankment on Soft Soil Using Geostudio

Road infrastructure development in Indonesia are growth rapidly until the government budgets some funds for development. Road construction in order to obtain the best road trace sometimes has to pass through various soil conditions. The condition of the soil in the area passed has the characteristics of problematic soils such as soft soils so the engineer needs to take the right construction method in the implementation of the project. The method of application of geofoam as embankment is one step or solution in dealing with the problem of soft soil. Therefore, in this study, researchers will analyze numerically the application of geofoam as embankment through an analysis model in Geostudio. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the application of geofoam on variations in thickness and placement (top, middle, and bottom) inside embankment on soft soil. The numerical analysis model at Geostudio is in the form of a comparison of geofoam applications with variations in thickness of 2 m, 4 m, and 6 m with a total height of 7 m of embankment. The results showed that the best geofoam application is top placement in embankment. The application of geofoam at top placement found the average percentage of settlement reduction value for the application of geofoam thickness of 2 m, 4 m, and 6 m calculated for each variations are 22.8%, 40.3%, and 50.5%.
