The Effect of Traffic Restriction Due to COVID-19 Pandemic on the Service Life of Pavement

At the end of 2019, the entire world was appalled to learn that the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has broken out. This situation forced many countries to impose restrictions on the mobilization of people from one place to another. Faced with this situation, many modes of passenger transport cannot be used freely or even temporarily stopped. The purpose of this study is to analyze the service life of roads subjected to normal and restricted traffic due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This research observed and analyzed collector roads Purwodadi–Geyer and Karanganyar–Tawangmangu–Kalisoro. The number of traffic recorded by cameras during the pandemic in 2020 was compared with the number of traffic recorded by cameras in 2019. Furthermore, the 1993 AASHTO method was employed to analyze the remaining service life of the roads under both conditions. The analysis shows that without maintenance or improvements, over the 40-year design life that the Purwodadi–Geyer road is intended to serve, it will only last until 2029 or the 12th year under normal or to 2028 or year 11th under restricted traffic conditions. Meanwhile, under similar circumstances to the other analysis, the 20-year design life of the Karanganyar–Tawangmangu–Kalisoro section will be reduced to last until 2023 or the 6 years under normal conditions and only last until 2024 or year 7 under limited COVID-19 traffic conditions.
