India is a land where wave of Folk Lore flows quietly besides the modern stream of globalization. There is another world of Folk people, perhaps somewhat illusory in the mirror of our elite urban sophistication. One of the expressions of Folk Lore is performing art that includes troupe dance. Dollu Kunithâ or the Drum dance is such a performing art in Karnataka. This dance associated with the Tandava Nritya of Bhairava (Lord Siva) is the dance of Shaivite Kuruba community who have their own myth and legend regarding their origin and this dance. This shepherd and food gatherer community, interestingly enough, had a large number of warriors taking a major part in Deccan politics. Today too like Past Dollu Kunithâ is performed in almost all religious and social ceremonies. There are variations in dance form with original root unchanged. The making of the Dollu, the performance of this dance, the attire of the performers—everything shows how extraordinaire is this! The changing lifestyle of Kurubas due to the economic pressure might be a threat to Dollu Kunithâ but recognitions from National and International level and government patronage make its future bright enough.
