Human existence on the Indian subcontinent can be traced back nearly 80,000 years. Different races of humans occupied this geographically diverse land, entering from different routes. The land is again and again invaded and inhabited by several waves of ethnic groups, immigrated from the west, north, and east in different time periods. Diversities, thus, reflect in every human association, whether it is in the socio-religious and cultural fields or in relation to humans and the environment. With time, people conceived different ideologies with respect to their nature and sustainability while adapting to different ecological and social conditions, and thus, they started practising their beliefs differently. Despite vast land, geographical isolation, and different natural resources, at some point, a few beliefs and practices are found common across India. A few of them are humans’ belief in spirits, practices of worshipping gods and goddesses to fulfil missions, worshipping trees etc. Some ancient beliefs and practices are still continuing in the light of modernisation. An attempt has been made to document some glimpses of Indian beliefs and practices in socio-religious and ecological contexts, ranging from the tradition of trance practices across India, the custom of appeasing deities by Indian dacoits before going for a raid, and the culture of tree worship in the Indian subcontinent.
