Use of Nanomaterials and Nanofertilizers to Increase Fertilizer Use Efficiency

The agricultural practice is one of the main reasons to keep humans in our planet. It is marked by the collection and care of seeds and plants for human consumption, playing a crucial role in sustaining life. The use of additives to improve crop yields began alongside this process and came to be known as fertilization. In the current days, to meet the demand put on the agricultural system by the growing population, fertilizers have been used to enhance food production, and overall efficiency for farming practices by enriching the natural quality of the soil. However, this increase in production is not linear, as the uptake of this additives has limits, with the excessive use already in place, consequences as the deterioration of soil structure, decline of soil microorganisms, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of substances or metals in plants and soil and water pollution are taking place. To ensure the global food production and decrease the impact caused by the overuse of fertilizers, nanofertilizers emerged as a promising way to increase the efficiency of fertilization. Nanotechnologies were defined as a promising tool to have more efficient and selective delivery systems, that can enhance the plant growth and its nutrient uptake, promoting a better and more sustained growth.
