Economics and Policies of the Developed Nations for the Promotion of Lignocellulosic Biofuels and Bioenergy

The advancement of lignocellulosic biofuels in developed countries is crucial for achieving a sustainable energy transition, particularly in light of increasing energy demands and environmental issues. Lignocellulosic biomass, including agricultural residues and forestry byproducts, presents a renewable substitute for fossil fuels, significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing dependence on unstable energy markets. Nevertheless, the progress of biofuels derived from this biomass faces numerous economic, regulatory, and technological obstacles, especially concerning elevated production costs and the intricate nature of adhering to diverse sustainability regulations. Innovations in conversion technologies, such as Simultaneous Saccharification and Co-Fermentation (SSCF) and Consolidated Bioprocessing (CBP), are vital for improving the efficiency of processing lignocellulosic materials. This chapter aims to delineate the current economic policies that support biofuel development, analyze the specific challenges faced, and provide recommendations to enhance the feasibility of lignocellulosic biofuels within the renewable energy sector.
