Jackfruit, scientifically known as Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam., holds the esteemed title of being the national fruit of Bangladesh and is extensively cultivated in tropical regions spanning China, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, parts of central and eastern Africa, Florida (USA), Latin America, and the Caribbean. Renowned for its exceptional nutritional benefits, jackfruit has captured the attention of food experts and technologists worldwide. However, despite its widespread cultivation, commercial production in Bangladesh and other countries faces challenges, including significant variability in fruit quality due to cross-pollinated nature, seasonal fruiting (June–August), and susceptibility to abiotic stresses (e.g., salinity, waterlogging, etc.). The genetic diversity of jackfruit, paramount for its improvement, has been compromised by deliberate or inadvertent selection processes. Prioritizing the measurement and preservation of variety baselines in jackfruit becomes imperative, particularly as industrialization accelerates and leads to potential limitations in selection. The absence of trait-specific molecular markers for the species has impeded genetic improvement and diversification studies, underscored the urgency of conserving species variety, and secured a diverse genetic pool for future breeding programs and research initiatives. Thus, there is a critical need to consolidate dispersed knowledge pertaining to various aspects of jackfruit characterization including genomic data. Recent advancements, such as the sequencing of whole genomes for both seasonal and year-round jackfruit varieties, present an opportunity for developing trait-based markers for molecular breeding. This chapter provides a comprehensive review and updates our understanding of identifying jackfruit cultivars, characterizing desirable traits or genes through genomic approaches, and evaluating valuable germplasm using morphological and molecular markers for molecular breeding to facilitate the commercial cultivation of jackfruit.
