The struggle for temporal autonomy is omnipresent in academic environments. Therefore, the question of who owns whose time is more pressing than ever, especially at a moment when the research project has become a central time generator. This chapter is structured around six essential tensions between different forms of time that coexist in the realm of academic research: research/management, project/process, individual/shared, accounted/flowing, interrupted/extended, and free/precarious. Together, these illustrate the multiple frictions we can observe that allow us to better understand the situation researchers find themselves in.
