Much has been written about the acceleration in academic research and beyond and on the feeling that speed and being first are immensely important. It may seem paradoxical, then, that moments and forms of waiting have been proliferating. Waiting for a funding agency’s decision, the verdict of a journal editor, or the completion of an experiment—this list can be extended. This chapter will explore the concept of power exercised through waiting, how researchers interpret waiting, what they do while in a state of waiting, and how waiting relates to the affective states researchers find themselves in.
