Time-related modifications in the metabolome are the main issues addressed whenever compared to any other variable taken into account in the experimental design. A critical topic dealing with PMI metabolomics is the choice of the biological matrix to be investigated. A major limiting factor in postmortem metabolomics that cannot be ignored during the experimental design is standardizing samples by PMI. The metabolome has been studied using mass spectrometry and NMR. This chapter reviews research in this area to date.
