Virtual Autopsy: An Innovative Approach to Determining Cause and Circumstances of Death

Conventional autopsy methods, commonly referred to as postmortem examinations, involve the detailed surgical exploration of a deceased individual to uncover the cause of death, diagnose potential diseases, and evaluate the extent of injuries. Despite their effectiveness, these procedures face notable challenges, including objections from families and health risks posed by exposure to hazardous biological substances. To mitigate these limitations, Thali and colleagues from the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University of Bern, Switzerland, developed the concept of “virtual autopsy” (VIRTOPSY) in the 1990s as a noninvasive alternative. This innovative approach integrates advanced imaging modalities, such as multi-slice spiral computed tomography (MSCT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and high-resolution three-dimensional external scans, to improve postmortem analyses. By eliminating the need for invasive procedures, virtopsy reduces complications and lowers the financial burden often associated with traditional autopsies. Its applications in forensic pathology span a diverse range of cases, including the investigation of traumatic injuries, forensic anthropology, and suspicious or unnatural deaths, such as those involving hanging, drowning, or abuse. Furthermore, virtopsy is particularly beneficial when examining bodies that are severely decomposed, burned, or otherwise damaged beyond recognition. These uses are explored further in subsequent sections of this chapter.
