The ten world maps to be explored in this chapter and the next have the following features. First, they are the oldest extant and most representative world maps produced between the twelfth and seventeenth century. The earliest one was made in 1136 and the latest in 1602, but most of them emerged between the thirteenth and seventeenth century, which marks a very special period in world history.
