The paper set out to analyse the effects of tropical cyclones on human security with regards to the economic security of rural households in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The three key objectives linked to human security are to a ascertain the levels of awareness on tropical cyclones of the rural households, assess the threats of tropical cyclones on rural household socio-economic security and examine the link between tropical cyclones and rural household social vulnerabilities. Empowerment Theory (ET) and the Social Vulnerability Theory (SVT) are the two theoretical frameworks which helped the researchers to conceptualise and broaden the analysis of the effects of tropical cyclones on human security with regards to rural household socio-economic security. The findings of the investigation confirmed that the governments of Mozambique and Zimbabwe were not doing enough to raise the levels of awareness of rural communities regarding the threats of tropical cyclones on human security. The critical recommendation of this investigation was that the governments of both Mozambique and Zimbabwe, through their respective line ministries within grassroots disaster risk reduction and management initiatives systems approach to reduce the risks imposed by tropical cyclones on human security.
