This chapter analyses the harnessing of home-grown knowledge towards resilience building in Lower Muzarabani—a natural disaster-prone area from 1980 to 2021. Natural disasters and diseases are largely triggered by the region’s physical landscape. Floods and droughts are the most common natural disasters whilst malaria and cholera are the region’s endemic diseases. These hazards have resulted in the destruction of infrastructure, famine, poverty, and loss of life. Nevertheless, the inhabitants continue to thrive in the area through the utilisation of indigenous knowledge. Findings from the study identified several home-grown resilience mechanisms which included, disaster prediction, rearing of drought tolerant livestock and crops, flood plain cultivation, harvesting of water and wild fruits to mention but a few. External stakeholders especially the Government of Zimbabwe (GoZ) and several Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have also contributed towards resilience building by bankrolling various community empowerment projects including provision of drugs, food, and agricultural inputs, among others. Despite the existence of numerous challenges affecting resilience building, the chapter concluded that the harnessing of local knowledge by the Lower Muzarabani community has been more effective than the role of external stakeholders in enabling the inhabitants to survive in the region for generations.
