Feasibility Research on the World’s Largest Floating Infinity Pool Edge

Bluet is a Finnish company pioneering innovative floating constructions, such as their solution for the Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como hotel. This project is the world’s largest floating infinity pool with a 40 m infinity edge which extends 7 m along both short sides of the pool. Special analysis was required to ensure the feasibility of the structure and to maximize the infinity edge effect. Ensuring the continuous water flow to maintain the infinity edge effect while concealing the edge is more challenging on a floating structure due to the movement. The research began by capturing data from Lake Como and using that information for computer modelling of possible solutions. Bluet built a 1:10 scale model of the shoreline and proposed pool for analysis in a research center wave pool. The test concentrated on optimizing the functionality of the infinity edge and the pool’s conformity [1] with the wave patterns of Lake Como. The experiment subjected the pool to a range of waves, including simulations of storm conditions. The analysis focused on determining the necessary water volume in the pool to maintain the desired effect and quantifying the spillage over the edge into the gutter. Throughout the testing phase, adjustments were made to the angles of the infinity edge gutter bottom and the gutter size, the pool weight, anchoring methods and shape of the structure. The process allowed the optimal design for the gutter, necessary water volume, pumping speed, and overflow tank size to be determined.
