The greenhouse effect is continuing to threaten our living environment. In response to this situation, the methods of sinking cultured macroalgae to achieve carbon sequestration have been proposed. Macroalgae are highly efficient carbon sequestrators with high carbon to nitrogen ratios and have been observed to have a high net primary productivity. Scientific evidence suggests that wild seaweeds can sequester large amounts of carbon in the ocean by exporting dissolved and particulate organic matters to the deep ocean. In this study, we simulated the potential of mariculture of macroalgae as a carbon dioxide removal method in Japan's exclusive economic zone using algae growth models. We also compared the effects of different growth models on macroalgal production.
