Our dependence on disposable plastics has created a massive problem. Plastic waste, especially single-use plastics, presents a substantial threat to ecosystems, marine life, and human health. Improper waste disposal methods and a lack of recycling facilities has led to the buildup of plastic waste in rivers, landfills, and seas, where they remain for hundreds of years, posing a threat to wildlife by being ingested or causing entanglement. In this study, the increasing plastic waste generation trend in India in the last decade has been analyzed and the waste generation in the next five years has been projected. Recycling has been proposed as an answer to solve the issue of plastic waste, aiming to transform this challenge into an opportunity. Recycling plastic isn’t just good for the environment by conserving resources, reducing energy use, and cutting greenhouse gases, it also creates valuable new products. Innovative ways to transform plastic waste into valuable products like fuel, construction materials, and even advanced carbon-based materials have been discussed. The article delves into various methods for tackling plastic waste, including established techniques like pyrolysis and thermal processing, and explores promising new approaches like upcycling and catalytic conversion. The conclusion suggests that recycling plastic not only helps alleviate negative environmental impacts but also opens up avenues for development and innovation by exploring novel products and designs.
