This chapter explores the expressive and pragmatic dimensions of the Thai language, focusing on how colloquial, idiomatic, and metaphorical expressions function in real-world communication. Moving beyond formal grammar, the chapter examines the dynamic use of language in everyday contexts, highlighting how expressions reflect social trends, cultural norms, and emotional nuances. It begins with an analysis of colloquial expressions, including slang, internet language, and culturally embedded phrases, showing their role in creating natural and relatable discourse. Idiomatic expressions are then discussed, emphasizing their poetic structure, figurative meaning, and cultural depth. The chapter also examines metaphorical expressions, illustrating how words acquire culturally specific symbolic meanings that enrich interpersonal communication. In addition to linguistic analysis, the chapter addresses communicative usage in Thai society, including politeness strategies, contextual appropriateness, non-verbal communication, and the use of social markers such as the /wâj/ (Thai greeting).
