We propose a novel mechanism for alternating copolymerizations of p-quinodimethane derivatives in solution. This comes from closely related behaviors of their copolymerizations in solid and solution states. Based on their cocrystal structures, alternating 1D columnar molecular assemblies are formed through stereospecific stacking between acceptor and donor monomers, resulting in very short distances between neighboring reaction centers. Such 1D columns bring about the alternating and stereospecific copolymerizations in solution spontaneously or with radical initiators. We suggest that this polymerization mechanism might be applicable to spontaneous alternating copolymerizations between TCNQ and styrene in solution.

摘要
