Herbal remedies have been used throughout the globe since time immemorial. Because herbal medicines possess fewer adverse effects than their synthetic counterparts, both physicians and patients have recognised their better therapeutic outcomes. Herbal medications, however, have numerous drawbacks, including poor absorption, stability, and solubility. Some of them may experience chemical and physical deterioration, which lessens their medicinal potency. To improve patient compliance and reduce the frequency of recurrent administration, they require a proper strategy for delivering the components over time. Developing novel drug delivery systems (NDDS) for herbs is one way to accomplish this. Herbal treatments may benefit from the use of nanosized drug delivery systems in the future to enhance their effectiveness and solve issues related to plant-based remedies. Research on herbal medicines with improved bioavailability and fewer toxicities may benefit significantly from the integration of nanotechnology and herbal medicine. Methods based on lipids, polymers, or nanoemulsions that are biocompatible, biodegradable, and based on delivery systems can be used to increase the solubility, stability, bioavailability, and pharmacological activity of herbal medications. Therefore, it is crucial to incorporate nanocarriers as NDDS into the conventional medical system to combat serious illnesses, including cancer, diabetes, and asthma. This chapter attempts to give a brief insight into the most recent advancements in the creation of herbal medicinal formulations based on nanotechnology principles for enhanced activity, along with an outline of the difficulties encountered by the delivery methods for such remedies.
