Memory Color Investigation: Effects of Chromatic Texture

Memory colors of familiar objects have been extensively studied and utilized in various fields, including imaging, lighting, and printing. Previous research on memory colors has primarily focused on collecting color data or evaluating memory colors based on visual appearance, with less attention paid to the influence of object texture. In this work, the impact of chromatic texture on memory colors was investigated in a color matching experiment with 20 familiar objects on a well-characterized display. Observers were asked to match the color appearance attributes of chromatic texture images, specifically lightness (L*), chroma (C* ab), and hue(hab) to their memories. The matching results were analyzed using the mean color differences from the mean (MCDM) and tolerance ellipses. Our results indicate that the use of chromatic texture cues can effectively decrease the inter-observer variabilities, compared to using grayscale images as a reference.
