EcoPLM—Implementation of the Concept of Green Product Life Cycle Management

The paper outlines the evolution of sustainability within industrial development, emphasizing the imperative for enterprises to transition toward greener operations, particularly in new product development. The research focuses on supporting the development of environmentally friendly products by implementing a method to assess and optimize products’ environmental impact early in their lifecycle, building upon the GreenPLM project. The paper, which is structured into five chapters, explores the integration of sustainability principles into Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, highlighting the fundamental role of PLM in facilitating eco-design, green manufacturing, and sustainable logistics. The central focus is the development of an EcoPLM system prototype designed to assist design engineers in aligning product designs with environmental objectives. The EcoPLM system, hosted in a cloud computing environment, integrates PLM and IoT subsystems to effectively manage product data and business logic. Key functionalities include defining business environmental goals based on impact categories, assigning goals to product components, specifying life cycle processes for impact calculation, and analyzing the environmental impacts of product designs. The system supports iterative product optimization, enabling engineers to test materials, assess impacts, and align designs with sustainability strategies. The EcoPLM system represents a practical implementation to foster sustainable practices within manufacturing enterprises. It provides tools for automated comparison of product variants based on environmental criteria and offers visual analytics for evaluating environmental impacts. This research contributes to advancing sustainability in product development by providing a structured approach to integrating environmental considerations into PLM systems.
