Establishing Misinformation as a Key Downside Risk in COVID-19 Vaccination: Evidence from Ethiopia

The containment measures implemented during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic were primarily designed to mitigate the spread of the virus, with vaccination quickly emerging as the most effective public health strategy to curb its impact. However, vaccine uptake remained low in Africa, particularly in sub-Saharan regions, where various challenges have hindered effective vaccination campaigns. This chapter establishes misinformation as a key downside risk factor affecting COVID-19 vaccination uptake in Ethiopia. Our findings reveal that general misinformation has a profound and detrimental impact on both the initial acceptance of vaccines and the subsequent number of doses received, while conspiracy theories play a comparatively non-significant role in influencing vaccine hesitancy. This evidence challenges the prevailing narrative that conspiracy theories are the predominant drivers of vaccine reluctance, highlighting the pervasive and damaging effects of broader misinformation beliefs. The results underscore the urgent need for targeted communication strategies that effectively leverage trusted institutions and influential community figures to address and counter misinformation.
