The connection between packaging design and environmental concern has influenced a lot of researchers. The preservation of the natural environment and sustainable development has become the worldwide problem of utmost concern in the current scenario. Hence, there are potential prospects for the packaging sector to investigate additional sustainability-related functions. In order to acquire pertinent information and explore alternative sustainable solution, this study covers a comprehensive literature review of the packaging design industry, sustainable packaging design, design intervention, material innovation, and other aspects that contribute to innovative packaging solutions. In order to explore the fundamental requirements for a holistic approach to develop sustainable packaging design (SPD), this will provide full consideration to the sustainability and act as an intervention to influence consumer’s behavior in a way that is beneficial to the environment and society. The research provides an overview of the design intervention and lead design decisions that could be made for extensive redesign or new design of sustainable packaging. The study offers insights on the procedures, components, and forms of these design interventions that may be investigated in the near future.
