Easing the Process of Breastfeeding for Mothers in Public Space

In a nation like India, public breastfeeding is a contentious topic. The discomfort with breastfeeding in public is a direct outcome of societal conditioning. This hapless circumstance has an emotional impact on the mother, who feels awful about not being able to feed her ravenous child. The fundamental objective of this research is to identify multidimensional concerns of mothers and factors that amplify societal stigma to normalize breastfeeding and improve the experience of nursing moms in public. A study is being conducted to better comprehend the perspectives of mothers from various habitual commuters. The research area included Indian cities such as Mumbai and Thane, and the sample size was 36 individuals. To identify divergent belief systems that contribute to the stigmatization of public nursing various research tools were utilized. Multiple concepts were synthesized, and recommended solution is outlined in the research report. Subsequently, a nursing bag was designed; “DearMaa” that simplifies the lives of nursing mothers in public. This approach is in conjunction with a campaign that promotes public nursing and normalizes the practice via repeated exposure. As a result, all mothers commended the approach, while 10% of mothers offered suggestions for improvement. The preceding are solutions that attempt to bridge the gap. Although it is difficult to abolish the taboo rapidly, the proposed method has potential to resolve the issue to some extent.
