The paper reviews the handicrafts made of natural or green fibres by looking at modern innovations, traditional techniques, and inclusions of concepts of sustainability. Natural fibre handicrafts represent a great tapestry of intellect and human creativity, but they retain some important socio-economic and environmental issues. The first section deals with different traditional design techniques from natural fibres that detail a wide array of materials and practices utilized in various cultures. It tells the story of how these works have survived the ravages of time and have served as showcases of culture, tradition, and heritage. The second part of the paper deals with innovations that are taking place today in handicrafts made from natural fibres. Due to increasing technological changes and interest in sustainable behaviour, a number of innovations have resulted in enhancing durability, utility, and aesthetic value of the crafts without losing their organic character. Finally, the paper examines the sustainability of natural fibre handicrafts. Whereas intrinsically designed to provide a source for renewable resources, sourcing, production, and end-of-life disposal are sources of various complexities that, when resolved, can realize their full potential as environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic materials. This review thus urges for more research and strategic policy decisions to support the natural fibre craft industry. Crafts from natural fibres may act as a strong connecting agent between traditional techniques and modern innovations, with sustainability at the core, towards moving to a sustainable and culturally richer future.
