Prevention and Control of Air Pollution
摘要
Replacement of carbon-rich fuels with low-carbon and high-energy efficiency fuels, establishment of industries at locations far away from human habitats, development of public transport system and persuading the masses to use public transport, promoting clean energy sources and establishing an effective pollution monitoring system, and strictly sticking to emission limits for industries and transport vehicles and implementing air quality standards are the powerful policy measures to significantly cut carbon emissions. A paradigm shift in energy sector is the only lasting solution to prevent, control, and eventually get rid of air pollution. Solar energy, wind energy, tidal power, geothermal energy, hydrogen, hydroelectric power, etc. serve as renewable, inexhaustible, and clean energy sources. Pollution control measures depend on the nature of the pollutants and availability of the technique to arrest the pollutant before it releases into the atmosphere, or destroy it, or convert it into a form not harmful for environment and/or human health. Particulate matter (PM) can be controlled using specific technical devices available. Control of gaseous pollutants is based on three principles: combustion, absorption, and adsorption. Automobile engines with high fuel-efficiency and use of high-quality fuel (minimum carbon and high calorific value) offer pretty effective preventive and control measures. Afforestation and reforestation, carbon sequestration enhancement, biodiversity enrichment, restoration of climax forests, soil fertility improvement, clean waters, efficient waste management, etc. are various activities that offer significant improvement in air quality and climate system.
