In the uncertain business scenario where overconsumption and eco-anxiety have become an extension of consumers’ identities, the demand for brands to establish authenticity and sustainable practices has escalated. This research paper investigates the interplay between sustainability and community impact within the landscape of design as a strategy. Specifically, it focuses on how two distinguished local specialty coffee brands, Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee and Foreword Coffee Roasters, balance the intricacy between meeting consumer expectations for sustainability and working within a regulatory framework where recycling is considered ‘optional’ in Singapore. Employing a cross-case study methodology, six semi-structured expert interviews and sentiment analysis were conducted for the two coffee brands. The study findings suggest that despite the absence of stringent environmental regulations, brands are proactively embracing sustainability due to consciousness and customer sentiments. Brands are increasingly becoming conscious and finding meaning in circular economy. This suggests that taking altruistic steps are not only an aspiration for the future but a collective responsibility. This paper contributes to the theory of design as a strategy in sustainability, encouraging practitioners, researchers, and designers to create meaning that invites and rejuvenates environmental and community heritage. The research emphasizes the role of design in innovative strategies and business models, highlighting the potential to contribute positively to the eco-system.

摘要
