In the metaverse, navigation serves as a critical component that considerably influences user understanding of content and interest toward next exploration. Inspired by the early visual communication forms found in cave paintings, we present a uniquely conceptualized virtual environment—MetaCave. Within this space, we explore an artistic approach to navigation that exploits the method utilizing emoji and text-fragmented design which align with visual communication Gestalt Principles theory to guide user interest and facilitate orientation. We conducted comparative experiments on three distinct navigation visual forms: Emoji-based approach; Emojis embedded with fragmented text; and fragmented text only. In addition, we also examined the user experience in both VR and non-VR modalities to understand the impact of the immersive environment on navigation preferences. Our findings reveal that the appeal of visually driven navigation aids is consistent across immersive VR and traditional desktop environments, underscoring their effectiveness in engaging and interesting users within the metaverse irrespective of the medium.
