Fusion of Ink and Algorithm: Exploring Embodied Interaction with Lingnan Painting Through Generative AI

The blending of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and traditional arts provides an exciting new model for the continuation and evolution of cultural artistry. In this paper, we investigate embedding GenAI technologies into the process of Lingnan painting. The research explores how the aesthetic paradigms of Lingnan artists are not only evoked within GenAI but also made accessible to new forms of embodied interaction with digital media. The study illustrates in experiments how AI algorithms can come to understand and adapt Lingnan painting brushwork, color combinations, as well as the patterns of compositions typical for that particular art style, mobilizing users into a form of interaction suitable with these systems. This article additionally covers the implications for artistic creativity, cultural heritage, and education within the context of this technology. The research demonstrates the potential of AI to be a creative partner for artists by allowing them to have more nuanced interactions with their generative models, which in turn illuminates deeper truths about where we can go when creating art is augmented through AI. The results show that this combination of technology and tradition allows for endangered forms to be recorded without losing any detail in the process while giving artists a new ability to build upon cultural preservation as well as cultivation.
