At first, Professor Duke and Professor Greenblat seemed to live in a different world from mine: They were well-known designers of sophisticated games who had authored textbooks on gaming simulation. I joined Professor Greenblat’s project and traveled with her across Europe for a few weeks. I subsequently spent a year with Professor Duke at the University of Michigan as a visiting scholar to learn how he managed his projects. These experiences helped me manage difficulties with courage—both in daily life and in facilitating gaming simulations. They became my role models, and I strive to be as open-minded as they were. As a professor in Japan, I try to transmit their thoughts and attitudes to my students and, in this chapter, I share what I learned from them.
