This chapter engages with lexicographic resources for learners of Persian and evaluates their suitability to the needs of Persian learners with a view to both encoding and decoding purposes. Seven Persian-related dictionaries are examined, categorized into three groups: (i) bilingual dictionaries—both English-Persian and Persian-English; (ii) monolingual learner’s dictionaries; and (iii) picture dictionaries. The discussions in this chapter are informed by the ongoing research on the general requirements of learner’s dictionaries and some of the achievements and innovations in major English-related learner’s dictionaries. The study shows that one major area for improvement in lexicographic resources for learners of Persian is in the field of English-Persian dictionaries since none of the current ones are a learner’s dictionary. The recent publication of two monolingual learner’s dictionaries, as well as the launch of a multimedia Persian picture dictionary, mark promising and welcome developments in the field. As Persian learners begin to utilize these resources, further research is needed to assess their effectiveness and utility.

摘要
