Culture is an essential component of second-language (L2) learning to an extent that it has been referred to as the “fifth language skill.” Despite the inextricable connection between language and culture, there is little consensus on how culture should be incorporated into L2 teaching classroom, particularly in languages that are not widely taught such as Persian. This chapter is thus devoted to teaching culture in L2, with an eye on the Persian culture. The chapter first presents definitions of the concept of culture and then discusses some of the main issues regarding teaching culture in L2. These issues include the importance of teaching culture and raising intercultural awareness in L2 classrooms and the possible consequences of neglecting cultural aspects of an L2. It also reviews the challenges teachers might encounter of teaching L2 culture and then introduces some pedagogical strategies for teaching culture. The chapter concludes with a discussion of a number of techniques to assess culture in L2 classroom. To learn a foreign language, we should go beyond learning grammar forms covered by communicative functions. Intercultural awareness is necessary for learners to fit into the world.

摘要
