One of the challenges in developing assessment materials for world languages such as Persian is to rate passages that align with learners’ proficiency levels, defined by assessment criteria like ILR and ACTFL. This chapter will look at some of the suggested methods for categorizing passages based on various factors, including text types, textual complexity parameters such as style, content, context, comprehensibility, syntactic structure, task, etc., and tries to correlate these parameters with the descriptive assessment criteria set forth by ILR and ACTFL. To illustrate these methods, we will carefully select and rate a variety of listening and reading passages in Persian. This chapter will provide comprehensive explanation of the rationale behind the passage ratings, offering insight into the complex process of matching assessment criteria with real-world language materials.
