One of the most common strategies for initiating repair is word search. Word search sequences are initiated when speakers encounter difficulty in retrieving a linguistic item, prompting them to interrupt the ongoing turn to ensure intersubjectivity, or a shared understanding between interlocutors in the conversation. This study employs multimodal conversation analysis (Mondada, 2014), with the goal of describing how Persian interlocutors employ the term ‘chiz’ (meaning ‘thing’) to create a conversational space for self-repair, solicit assistance from their conversation partners for other-repair, or use ‘chiz’ as a substitute for sensitive words (e.g., those related to taboos or sensitive issues) to manage conversational delicacy. The data for this study were gathered from 7 h of Persian conversations taking place in a classroom, a reality cooking TV show, and videos of two social media influencers.
