In Persian compound verbs, the same light verbs are repeatedly used, and the other components determine the whole meaning in most cases (i.e., derâz keshidan ‘to lie’, jâru keshidan ‘to sweep’, or xamyâze keshidan ‘to yawn’). The main objective of this study is seeking a comprehensive explanation for compound verbs on the basis of language cognition to teach these verbs in an easy, and comprehendible way. To perform the study, two tests (a pre-test and a post-test) were developed and implemented on two groups including 15 students. The pretest reveals that there are similar in understanding new compound verbs. Then, these two groups were taught in two different methods. The first class learned these verbs through image schemas, while the second class learned with random ways like describing, presenting a synonym, or using the verb in a sentence. The findings reveal that when learners understand the meanings of the light verbs, they follow image schemas; the containment, path, force, and the link schemas, the part-whole, and the other related schemas can predict new compound verbs, and the learners may have better results in learning new ones.
