A great part of the literature advocates that the electric vehicle is one of the solutions towards more sustainable development in a low-carbon era. Nevertheless, apart from the environmental issues caused by the final disposal of the battery at the end of the EVs useful life, it is important to discuss the social impacts caused by the mining to produce these batteries. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to evaluate if and how the main players in the electrical vehicle industry (BYD and TESLA) as well as the European Union are addressing the social impacts caused by cobalt mining, with emphasis on the exploitation that take place on Democratic Republic of Congo (DCR). Content research, as in Bardin, was performed in the 2023 sustainable reports published by BYD and Tesla (private sector perspective), and the same methodological approach was adopted to analyze the UE reports (governmental point of view). Strategies to relieve the identified social burden were also gathered from the selected reports. As the main results, we identified that the efforts are still preliminary and do not completely address the negative impacts in DRC.
