Brassinosteroids Contribute to Zinc Stress Tolerance: Dissecting the Responses in Crops

Zinc (Zn) is a mineral element recognized as a micronutrient in plant nutrition. Brassinosteroids are a class of over 70 polyhydroxy steroid derivatives, widely dispersed across the plant kingdom, exhibiting a diverse range of physiological effects when administered exogenously at nanomolar to micromolar concentrations. This chapter seeks to determine if exogenous EBR treatment might mitigate stress induced by Zn in plants, assessing the potential effects on physiological, biochemical, nutritional, and morphological responses. This chapter demonstrated that the external administration of BRs alleviated the adverse effects induced by Zn stress on plant metabolism. The advantageous impacts on gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, and oxidant substances validate the merits of this steroid. Decreases in stress markers imply that the function of BRs is associated with antioxidant metabolism and the preservation of chloroplast integrity.
