Zinc in Soils and the Regulatory Roles of Soil Properties

Zinc has been proven to be a good micronutrient for both plants and animals, and it has also been essential in several physiological and metabolic processes. In soils, zinc occurs in different forms, and its accessibility is greatly affected by soil pH, texture, organic matter content, and moisture. This chapter studies the properties of soils with a particular focus on zinc and how such properties affect the solubility, retention, and mobility of the zinc substance. Soil pH affects the bioavailability of zinc significantly, and it has been observed that this element is highly available in acidic soils in the alkaline soils. Water, together with moisture content and drainage systems, is responsible for the distribution of water in the porosity of the soils and therefore influences the leaching and accumulation of zinc in the soil profiles. This chapter further analyzes the issue of zinc uptake by the plants and points out the deficiency problem as an absolute necessity for conducting further research aimed at developing such a management approach allowing zinc to be used by crops in the most efficient way possible. Also, the topic touches contamination of zinc and its threat to the health of the population and environment and explains the need for regulation to decrease threats.
