Performance Investigation and Improvement of Optical Access Networks by Adding FiWi Energy-Efficient Technique

In this work, we accentuated on the performance and energy improvement of conventional optical access networks by introducing two different FiWi systems, each with unique configurations and functionalities aimed at optimizing performance and energy efficiency. In first configuration, optical network units (ONUs) are enabled with free space optical (FSO) technology and even/odd transmitter activation for energy saving. Further, a second configuration offering dual channel switching at ONUs in the proposed configuration is introduced to further improve the energy efficiency. The findings demonstrate that adopting an even/odd active transmitter configuration with FSO-supported ONUs can achieve significant energy savings (26.04%). Furthermore, under harsh weather conditions, additional 30% energy efficiency can be obtained by switching to distribution fiber (DF) channels instead of relying on FSO. The presented system can cover 60 km via SMF link and 1 km over FSO/DF This dual approach not only enhances energy efficiency but also improves network reliability and performance, making it a compelling strategy for modern FiWi network designs.
