Positive psychology is a transformation from repair to reconstruction, from the negative side of human nature to its positive aspect. A unique feature of Indian thought and scholarly texts is that they contemplate about the different aspects of the world, and set out to conquer the problem of existential suffering. In most of the Indian texts, the deliberations focus on seeking a happy state of mind, pursuing a happy life and avoiding unnecessary pain. Indian traditions from- Vedic to non-Vedic times have extensively dealt with the issues of human well-being, which are the core themes of contemporary positive psychology. Against this backdrop, this chapter attempts to trace the roots of positive psychology in ancient Indian thought and texts and to explore the Indian perspective on positive psychology.
