Cultural Models of Selfhood and Pathways to Well-Being
摘要
The desire to be happy and healthy has existed for a long time. The rising levels of misery and people's desire to improve their living conditions in the contemporary period have reignited interest in the study of the dynamics of happiness and sadness in the modern world. The European and American research in this area is organised around the concept of the independent and autonomous self. This self is characterised by its presence in a consumerist milieu, its pursuit of pleasure through hedonistic means, and its ability to preserve a distinct and limited sense of self. The Indian concept of self tries to broaden the scope of the debate about happiness and the self by introducing the concept of a spiritual, multi-layered, and porous selfhood. It provides a means to discover delight by connecting with others and erasing barriers that now exist between us and others. This perspective comes with the responsibility of creating and keeping a community that can support itself and understands the importance of helping one another by providing support.
