Spectrum of Positive Emotions: Exploring the Lighter and the Darker Side
摘要
Positive emotions such as joy, delight and gratitude are beneficial in bringing about a sense of well-being and building positive attitudes among people. A lot research has pointed out that cultivating positive emotions support mental well-being, personal fulfilment and social good. The emerging field of Positive psychology as well as neuroscience has also laid stress on fostering positivity and recognising the role of positive emotions in building resilience, social connections, broadening mental perspectives, stimulating creativity, fostering problem-solving and overall life satisfaction. Resultantly, they also have a positive impact on immune function and overall physical health. However, it is essential to recognise the potential drawbacks of excessive positivity, such as overconfidence and the neglect of negative emotions, which can result in emotional exhaustion and burnout. Research highlights the benefits of positive emotions for psychological well-being, resilience, and social relationships, while also acknowledging the risks of blind optimism and selective attention. This chapter discusses the effects of too much positivity. Embracing a balanced view of positive emotions helps individuals effectively manage challenges and build meaningful relationships.
