Empathy is an important socio-cognitive ability that refers to the capacity to infer the emotional state of oneself and others and respond appropriately to it. Empathy was previously viewed as a static trait; however, researchers now consistently argue that empathy can be taught and trained. As schools serve as a secondary medium of socialisation during childhood, we argue that classroom settings can be utilized to train children in empathic abilities. In this chapter, we begin with providing a brief introduction to empathy, by reflecting on its functional importance and relevance in the Indian context. We reflect on the importance of the de-centralisation of Euro-centric narratives by simultaneous integration of non-western perspectives in the conceptualisation of empathy. We then describe the development of empathy in young children as they move towards embracing empathetic adult personalities. We also attempt to draw from the research and theory of empathy in the domain of developmental psychology, with a special focus on the emergence of empathy in classroom settings, and the various methods that can be utilized to enhance empathy in school children.
