Human beings are in constant pursuit of happiness and well-being. This pursuit is the basis of all development and advancements in almost all fields; whether be it agriculture, art and craft, religion, politics, academic pursuits, developments in science and technology, commerce and industry or any other field. This handbook draws from diverse fields such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, religion, and positive psychology to provide unique insights on well-being and happiness with an aim to implement these perspectives and insights in the field of education. Education is supposed to be a transformative process which brings about a holistic development in the personality of a person, touching upon all the aspects viz cognitive, physical, social, emotional, moral, ethical, aesthetics and spiritual. However, the educational landscape has been taken over by a cut-throat competitive spirit, making students as well as their parents, schools, colleges and the entire system focus on not holistic development but on certain quantifiable aspects of academic achievement only. The joy and pleasure of learning have been taken over by over-zealous attempts to find success in education as well as in life. This has led to stress, conflicts and mental health challenges. Therefore, there is a need for reorienting the education systems towards the original purpose, which has been emphasised by thinkers all over the world, especially the ancient Indian Thought systems. This handbook explores the intersection of Indian thought systems, Positive Psychology and Education. The objective is to delve into educational processes which lead to overall development, overall well-being, and development of happiness and wisdom among individuals; thereby leading to cohesive societies.
