摘要
Migrants play an important role in the advancement of Philippine economy and society. These migrants employ their home country’s traditional values in securing success in their chosen business ventures. Along with these values, they also exhibit bravery of taking risks and having bricolage attitude, creatively use their social and cultural capitals as well as ability of transnational embeddedness. Such experience is indeed true in the case of Indian migrants in the Philippines particularly in the Visayas and Mindanao. For decades, these Indian migrants have built their own families and network of friends and business associates as well as made considerable connections with Filipinos in various sections of the Philippines. This chapter, therefore, focuses on the Indian migrant entrepreneurship in southern Philippines. In particular, this chapter makes an inventory of the Indian migrant entrepreneurship in Visayas and Mindanao and looks at the strategies they employed to maintain and expand their businesses in the area as discussed in case studies. This study has employed library and archival research; interviews with key informants (mostly business owners and human resource personnel) either through face-to-face correspondences or through phone, email or social media platforms. Focus group discussions were also utilized to supplement interviews in documenting the cases of Indian migrant entrepreneurship in the southern part of the country.
