In the context of Indian low-skilled migration to Southeast Asia, historical, economic, and social dynamics have played pivotal roles. This chapter explores the trends and significance of Indian labor migration to Southeast Asia, highlighting its historical roots, contemporary patterns, and prospects. The first section of the paper deals with the close relationship shared by India and the countries in Southeast Asia in the ancient time period, following which the migration of low-skilled laborers from India under colonial rule is discussed in detail, by tracing the political, economic, and social motivations for the same. This chapter aims to understand the various facets of low-skilled migration from India to Southeast Asia over the years and draw a parallel to the conditions of current low-skilled laborers in Southeast as well as other parts of the world.
