Indian Diaspora in Timor-Leste

This chapter provides an overview of the Indian Diaspora in Timor-Leste, a small island nation in Southeast Asia. The study is based on secondary sources such as academic papers, books, and reports on the Indian community in Timor-Leste. The Chapter highlights the historical context of Indian immigration to Timor-Leste and the reasons behind their migration. It also examines the population size and growth rate of the Indian community, their geographic distribution across regions, and the age and gender composition of the Indian population. The chapter discusses the education and occupational profile of the Indian Diaspora in Timor-Leste, including their contributions to the Timorese economy through entrepreneurship and business activities. The challenges and opportunities faced by Indian businesses in Timor-Leste are also examined. Additionally, the Chapter explores the political participation of Indians in Timor-Leste, including their representation in government and civil society organizations. Finally, the Chapter discusses the cultural participation of Indians in Timor-Leste and their efforts to promote Indian culture and traditions in the country. The impact of Indian cultural participation on Timorese society is also examined. This study is significant because it sheds light on a relatively understudied aspect of the Indian Diaspora in Southeast Asia. The findings of this study can have policy implications for both Timor-Leste and India, as it provide insights into the social, economic, and cultural contributions of the Indian community in Timor-Leste.
